PARENT INFORMATION
An adult from each child's family is required to serve as a "duty parent", spending the morning with the children one to two times per month. (2-Day program - 1-2 mornings per month; 3 day program - 2-3 mornings per month). Duty parents are helpers at the Nursery School, they are there to facilitate easy play among the children, they should not however, interfere with or dominate the children's activities. The teachers are in charge of the classroom, and their instructions regarding each duty parent's job should be followed. The job as a duty parent is rewarding for most parents as they watch their children master new skills and see budding friendships develop. Because Duty Parents have as their first priority the activities of all children in the class, a policy has been set which does not allow duty parents to bring siblings in on duty days. A number of families usually have siblings not attending Nursery School, and exchanges are frequently arranged between duty parents for babysitting. Other Membership Requirements
In addition to regular duty days, other mandatory Co-op responsibilities include participation on a Committee or on the Board; full participation in fundraising projects, clean-ups, and attendance at General Meetings. My School is administered totally by parents. To manage this job four Standing Committees have been set-up: Membership, Program, Space and Equipment and Special Events/Fundraising. Someone from each family (not necessarily the same one as the duty parent) must work on one of these committees, and/or be a member of the Board of Directors. The Administrative Structure section of this handbook describes the mandate and function of the Board and Standing Committees. Committee work requires time and energy, but usually gives parents a time to meet and talk without the children (meetings are usually at night), thus allowing for an expanded adult social life. Your roots in the community will grow! All members must attend the General Meetings. General Meetings serves to ratify decisions of the Board, for Committee Chairpersons to report on their work and for general members to raise concerns or issues that might require a vote. Attendance is taken at these meetings. Failure to attend two consecutive meetings may result in dismissal from the Co-operative.
According to the Day Nurseries Act, toys, furniture and equipment must be washed regularly and kept in good repair. For this reason, all members are required to participate in one evening of cleaning up in the classroom during the school year. The Space & Equipment Committee organize these clean-ups. Members will be assigned one evening in the year. If they are unable to come that evening, they must phone the Space & Equipment Committee Chairperson to arrange an alternate clean-up evening. Monies raised through the School's Fundraising events allow us to improve programming, replace worn out toys and to maintain emergency funds. All members must participate in the fundraising events that are held throughout the year. An adult from each child's family is required to serve as a duty parent. A full description of Duty Days is outlined above. |
